Marseille's cruise terminal — officially the Môle Léon Gourret — welcomes hundreds of cruise ships and millions of passengers every year, whether embarking or calling in. Located in the heart of the Grand Port Maritime, it is neither easy to reach by public transport nor straightforward to navigate with several suitcases. This guide answers the practical questions: exactly where is it, how do you get there from the airport or the station, and which transfer option should you choose to board without the stress.
Where is Marseille's cruise terminal?
The Môle Léon Gourret sits within the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, north of the Old Port, between the Joliette district and La Major. Several berths follow one another over several hundred metres: depending on your ship and cruise line, your exact embarkation terminal can vary (CMA CGM Terminal, Hangar 13, Terminal Léon Gourret…). It is therefore essential to check the terminal name shown on your cruise ticket before your transfer.
By private car, the port is relatively close to the city centre (around 15 to 20 minutes outside peak hours), but traffic is heavy and long-stay parking is expensive. By taxi or bus, the service is limited and poorly suited to cruise luggage.
From Marseille-Provence Airport: the direct route
The vast majority of cruise passengers fly into Marseille-Provence Airport (MRS) in the morning to board early afternoon. The airport-to-cruise-terminal journey takes approximately 35 to 55 minutes, depending on traffic on the A55 and around the port.
- Taxi: available at the terminal exits, metered, price varies with traffic and time of day — expect roughly €85 to €120 with no guaranteed fare.
- Bus + metro: the airport shuttle reaches Saint-Charles station (25–30 min), then metro line 2 to Joliette (5 min), then a walk with suitcases to the terminal. Cumbersome and poorly suited to cruise luggage.
- Private transfer: pick-up in the arrivals hall, drop-off directly at the foot of your terminal. Fixed price, confirmed at booking, no surprises.
For this combined airport-to-cruise journey, a private transfer is the most logical option: a single vehicle, no connections, the driver handles port access and delivers your luggage to the right place. Find out more on our Marseille port transfer page.
From Saint-Charles station
If you are arriving by train — TGV from Paris, Lyon or Bordeaux, or intercity services from elsewhere — Saint-Charles station is approximately 15 minutes from the cruise terminal by vehicle (indicative). Getting there on foot or by metro with suitcases remains far from convenient.
A private chauffeur meets you on the platform with a name sign and drives you directly to your embarkation terminal. If your train is delayed, your driver monitors the actual arrival time and adjusts the pick-up accordingly.
Cruise lines and terminals at Marseille
Marseille is one of the leading cruise ports in the Mediterranean. Ships operating from here include those of:
- MSC Cruises — regular calls, with frequent departures to Italy, Greece and Spain
- Costa Cruises
- PONANT — French luxury cruise line, based in Marseille
- Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival — on port calls
Each cruise line may use a different berth. Always check the exact terminal on your cruise documents and pass that information to your driver when booking.
The return journey: collecting your luggage and leaving smoothly
The end of a cruise is often the most demanding part: disembarkation in waves, collecting luggage on the quayside, then transferring to the airport or station with flights or trains to catch. This is precisely where a private transfer makes all the difference.
- Your driver waits on the quayside at the agreed time, name sign in hand
- Help with luggage from the terminal to the vehicle
- Direct journey to the airport, station or your hotel, with no connections
- Fixed price agreed in advance — even if disembarkation takes longer than expected
For groups or families with several suitcases, the private van for up to 8 passengers is particularly well suited: everyone travels together in a single vehicle at a group rate.
A port call in Marseille: what to do with a day ashore
If your ship is calling at Marseille rather than departing from it, you generally have 6 to 10 hours to explore the city and its surroundings. An hourly chauffeur hire lets you make the most of that time.
- The Old Port, Le Panier and the MuCEM (30 min from the terminal)
- Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde and its panoramic views
- The Calanques and Cassis (approximately 30 to 40 min from the port) — see also our Cassis transfers
- Aix-en-Provence (around 40 min) for a morning in the historic centre
In every case, the driver brings you back on board before the sailing deadline — that is his responsibility, and he plans the day around it.
How much does a transfer to the cruise terminal cost?
Fares vary according to your departure point, vehicle type and timing. As a guide:
- Marseille-Provence Airport → cruise terminal: from €80 in a luxury sedan
- Saint-Charles station → cruise terminal: from €30 in a sedan (pick-up fee + short journey)
- City-centre hotel → terminal: from €30 depending on the exact address
- Hourly hire (for a port call or a full day): on request, based on duration
The private van (up to 8 passengers) is charged at a higher rate but remains cost-effective for a group: split between several passengers, it often works out cheaper than multiple taxis.
